Undoubtedly named from the Spanish word meaning ‘beautiful’ for its idyllic wide beaches and serene seascapes, the development of lovely Hermosa Beach began in the early 1900’s. Around this time, a trolley system transported daytrippers and weekenders from Los Angeles via the Santa Fe Railway along what is now Pier Avenue. Though smaller in size than neighboring Manhattan Beach or Redondo Beach, Hermosa is big on its free-spirited laissez-faire attitude. Like most of Southern California, the coastline is dotted with swimmers, sunbathers, and surfers alike from the famous Hermosa Pier, as seen in Hollywood’s blockbuster hit La La Land, to the border at Herondo Street. Likewise, volleyball is ever important especially with the AVP hosted near the Pier each July. Along The Strand, bikers, joggers and skaters bustle down the bike path, while others desiring a more peaceful experience choose the tree trimmed mulch path known as the Hermosa Valley Greenbelt along Valley Drive. The greenbelt makes the perfect spot for a run or to walk the dog. Daily, sun-worshipers stroll along the pedestrian-only Hermosa Pier promenade where dining, entertainment and people watching are aplenty. Furthermore, during summer months, each Sunday, the city hosts The Hermosa Beach Summer Concerts on the sand, a fun event for the whole family.
